Tyranny of Hours

Tyranny of Hours releases Christmas song “The Silver Wheel”

From the ToH vaults… We wrote “The Silver Wheel” in 2014, after we were invited to contribute an original song for a European Christmas metal album compilation. Unfortunately, that Euro project never was released…but fortunately – we have a new (to our fans) Christmas tune to share – and just in time for the holidays!

ToH will donate 100% of  proceeds from downloads of “The Silver Wheel” made through December 31st 2017, to Salem Union Gospel Mission and to Portland Rescue Mission. These and many other shelters are simply overwhelmed and especially so during the harsh winter months. Every donation is gratefully accepted and put to max use.

Please join Tyranny of Hours in helping to make this season a little more bearable for those with so little!

The second album is complete!

It’s been a long 4 years since we released our 2013 debut album, “Tyranny of Hours”, but we have finally completed our second record and will be announcing the release date shortly. 4 years is a long time to write and record any album, but there were plenty of other adventures along the way that kept us a bit under wraps.

Shortly after the release of the debut album, we had a series of member changes – drums and bass, to be specific – as well as a significant health scare with Michelle that set us on our heals through the end of 2014. With a few new songs and a great new lineup, we decided to spend 2015 concentrating on live performance, and played a series of shows through 2015, while we wrote the remaining material for the new album. We switched gears in early 2016 and hit the studio to record drums in early summer, took a pause for a headline Fall performance and then resumed full speed ahead on the album.

The new album will showcase a greater dive in to progressive influences than the first album, while maintaining the sound that ToH has become known for.

Stay tuned for the announcement of a release date, as well as teasers and show dates.

Cheers – Don

Add in excellent sound and lights…big, good food and drinks…loads o’ free parking…and a venue not far from I-5 for easy freeway access …what more can one ask for??? See you there!

Late year shows and back to the studio.

Autumn has definitely hit us (with the rain!) – – and another year has just flown by.  As we head into November, we are announcing two Live shows to wrap up 2015.

First – we will perform at the 2015 MOGO Music Festival in Portland, OR on Saturday, November 21st. This is a great opportunity to catch some of the top original bands in Portland, and takes place at a really cool venue (Gothic – Portlandia style) called Dante’s (Inferno).

Second – we headline a big New Year’s Eve bash at The Hangar in Salem (December 31 2015 – of course). This is your chance to catch a full length Tyranny of Hours concert, featuring a number of new songs from our upcoming 2nd album, as well as a few other surprises.

Speaking of!! The new album is almost written! Eleven songs of progressive symphonic deliciousness. We start tracking drums at the big room in Black Diamond studios in January.

So  – SAVE the DATES! We hope to see you all, soon!

Cheers – Don

We’re very excited to introduce new ToH drummer, Alex McDonald!

With the additions of  Matt Galligan on bass, earlier this year – – and Alex McDonald replacing Larry London this month as stickman — the guys have already set the bar so much higher for us…and that is GOOD! Alex and Matt working together with Don, has very quickly forged a completely different vibe to ToH’s feel and sound.

And I honestly gotta say – – it just finally feels…RIGHT. How awesome to have the rockin’ metal rhythm section we’ve always envisioned since starting ToH! (And  so fun and inspiring to work with people we can actually laugh and sweat with in rehearsals — then hang and share a beer with as friends.)

Now…with such critical pieces of this crazy quilt finally in place, it’s time to get a move on. Finishing new material together for our 2nd album. Planning a “real” video. And cool stuff like getting real “band pictures”! (Something we were never able to do before, due largely to scheduling and logistics challenges and the rather unsettled and transitory nature of our past line ups).

Change is never easy and this last one was not without its bumps…but it was absolutely the right decision for us, to keep Tyranny of Hours not only whole — but to grow as a band.

We deeply appreciate the contributions of each person who has played a role in ToH’s story. And Thank You to all our friends and fans who have stuck with us from the start – or joined us along our journey – – cheering us on to build the best possible band and music for you, that we possibly can!

May 16th 2014

Hello to you all!

I am deeply sorry we’ve been quiet for so long! Just weeks after last June’s CD Release show — I got sick. Real sick. Gig plans built on the momentum of our album release and press reviews, as well as our much-anticipated Halloween Ball… immediately thrown into suspended animation. As I slowly recovered through Fall and Winter.

But I’m a lot better, now — so we are pumped to get back to all things ToH!!

Looking back, 2013 was a pivotal year for Tyranny of Hours.  Released our debut album. Threw a gigantic CD Release and Press show/party at Black Diamond Studios in Portland to an SRO crowd – the place was packed to the gills! Their normally peaceful neighborhood never quite knew what hit ‘em!

So. We are picking up the threads of where we left off and really revving things into gear. There’s a lot going on!

First – the incredible guitarist of Pacific Northwest band, NeverawakE — our good friend, Matt Galligan – is even busier now because he just joined us as our bass player. We’re honored to be able to play with him.

Next – we’re adding the final brush strokes to an original Christmas song, “The Silver Wheel”, slated as part of a European CD compilation of worldwide metal bands for a global fundraiser.

Also –speaking of Halloween Ball …YES – – it is a go!!!  The 2014 Tyranny of Hours Halloween Bash is on – we’ll be rockin’ it live in Salem Oregon on Saturday, October 25th at Duffy’s Hangar with Special Guests “Lumus”.  We would love to see you there!

Tickets are already on sale and selling briskly.  The club only holds 300 souls, meaning we fully expect a sell out — so don’t wait!
Get your tix – and our debut CD — here: http://tyrannyofhours.spinshop.com

One More Thing: we deeply thank every person who has purchased or intends to buy our CD, show tickets, etc. It’s crushingly expensive for independent bands to produce and deliver high-quality music and mount live shows – not just for Tyranny of Hours – but for scores of killer bands around the world. On behalf of us all: thank you for supporting original music and allowing us to keep on keepin’ on for you.

Tyranny of Hours – CD Release Party

Tyranny of Hours kicked of the first of their 2013 shows with a CD release party and showcase performance at Black Diamond Studios. Sponsored by Cascade Sound, the band brought in a concert sound and light system to the private venue and captivated the audience with a complete performance of their debut album. Check out the Pictures Page for more pictures of the show.

The Final Week

It’s amazing how many details go into a modern recording. As the band is heading into the final week of mixing (and last minute recording) it seems like the “to do” list is growing faster than the “it’s done” list. At some point we just have to choose what is “good enough” and move onto the next bit. Whether we feel it’s perfect or just close enough, final mix is complete on November 24th. I can’t help but wonder what it was like to be a band in the glory days of rock and roll, when they would just roll into a studio, set up their gear and jam through their songs for a few days. Maybe they would even spend a few weeks working with a producer on adding some new parts, some harmonies or even writing a new single to make album more commercial. By then, the band was done expect for maybe a few days spend on the final mix. Modern recording in the age of indepedent music has turned that natural process into a technical- almost mechanical- process of mapping, planning, writing, tracking, editing, tuning, tweaking, routing and layering where the band themselves are responsible for every technical decision and all the legwork…well, you get the idea. Luckily, Tyranny of Hours has been very fortunate to work with Producer and Engineer Matt Jefferson. Without his technical input, ideas and experience we would never have been able to pull this off. So, for us 21 months of tedious work is in the hopper. One more week of mixing and the album heads off for mastering and then to print!

21 Months: Recording a Symphonic Metal Album-Part 1: The Beginning.

It took us 21 months to write and record the Tyranny of Hours album. It seems excessive just saying it. That is about a full year longer than we had planned, but as we went through the process we realized that our firsts goals of a 6-8 month album recording were not even close.

In March of 2011 we finally had the band together—or most of the band at least; we were still short a bass player. We had played with drummer Russ Rosenbalm off and on for the last couple of years, but he was now on board with the band, which we had recently renamed. The original band name “InVellum “was just a bit too obscure and it didn’t really have the snap that we wanted. Michelle had written the lyric line “The Tyranny of Hours-it bleeds us” in one of the songs we were working on (titled Destined for a Memory) and after going through what seemed like thousands of band name ideas, it just popped out one day that we should use Tyranny of Hours. It stuck and everyone agreed it was a better than the average band name and actually had some meaning behind it. For keyboards, we had joined up with James Borst from Cry for Eden. Cry for Eden was James’s Orchestral Rock project that was in the writing and recording stage, not too far ahead of Tyranny of Hours.  We had met James through the grapevine of local musicians and hit it off right away. There aren’t exactly a shitload of symphonic metal composers in Oregon, and James just happened to live a few miles away. Don had recently spent a few months helping James record guitar parts for Cry for Eden- after James parted ways with previous guitar players that were already on some of the recordings. In return James agreed to work with Tyranny of Hours. It seemed like a match made in heaven, so we got underway with writing songs and practicing as a band, while we continued the look for a bass player.

In a previous incarnation of Tyranny of Hours, (InVellum circa 2010) the focus was heavy on the prog side of things. One composition we were working on had about 20 time signature changes and was quite experimental-to say the least. The same held true for the other songs we were developing. After some deliberation, we decided that we needed to have a bit more straight forward and energetic approach. We agreed to abandon all of our old songs and set out to write brand new material. That week in March we sat down and wrote out the song Amber in 2 days. We realized quickly that we had something with this song and pushed to finish it over the next few days.

In April of 2011 things were progressing well. Don had decided to take the plunge and purchase a 7 string guitar. He picked up a mint Ibanez RG7620 from Ebay and proceeded to write the intro for “The Hapless Wand” on the very first day. The 7 string helped create new textures and rhythmic ideas for the heavier sound that the band was after. Additional songs followed in the next few weeks and months as we headed into summer 2011. Within 4 months most of the album had been written: 5 complete songs and a few more partially finished ideas were floating around. As we were heading toward Fall with a nearly a full set of material, we decided to shift gears and throw a big Halloween party and debut the live set from Tyranny of Hours to 75 of our closest friends. In retrospect it derailed us from working on getting the album finished. We hadn’t found a bass player that fit the part yet, but we decided Don could pre-record the bass tracks and sequence them back for the show. We set the show date for October 28th and tore into finishing the material for the album. Then, one day in July as we got together for rehearsal, Russ broke the news that he would be leaving town—and the band—moving to Spokane, Washington to be with a sick parent. Obviously that was a big blow. Russ was a longtime friend and solid drummer. Without a drummer, we felt the future for Tyranny of Hours was up in the air.

To be continued…

Recording of the album is almost done!

That’s right. After 19 months of writing and recording, the album is nearly done. Thanksgiving weekend is our final mixing session and we are off to mastering immediately! It will have been 21 long months since we started this journey, it’s soon going to be time to shift gears and get our live shows booked
